Are you considering bringing your pet to your baby’s newborn photography session? We personally love having dogs at our sessions. First of all, I truly believe that dogs are Angels here on Earth, here to help us and bring out the best of us. Secondly, the team at the studio are all pet people, some have cats, some have dogs and then of course the other various other pets like fish, hermit crabs, birds, etc.

We have only had dogs at the studio. We’re open to cats and we did have one scheduled however, parents decided it wasn’t a good idea on the session day, so the cat stayed home.

If you are considering bringing your pet, ok, dog with you to a session, here are a few things to consider:

  1. How well behaved is your dog? Photography studios can be full of expensive, sensitive equipment plus having a pet under your feet with a newborn can be hazardous.

  2. Be sure to ask your photographer. If your dog is behaved enough to handle a few hours away from home, then book a photographer that will allow your pet to attend the session. How do you find a photographer that allows pets/dogs at their studio? Well, if you look at their social media and website galleries and see pets in some of the photos, that’s a good indication that the studio is pet friendly. You can always reach out to the studio directly and ask, too.

  3. Either way, be sure to speak about bringing your pet with the photographer before the session and not to spontaneously decide to bring your dog on the day of the session. Photographers and their staff/assistants/makeup artists etc should get a heads up about who will be at the studio for the session. Speaking from a photographer’s perspective, it certainly helps knowing about your pet in the pre-planning stage of your session. Before your session ever takes place, I’m arranging set designs and there’s such enthusiasm already with newborn sessions and when you add in a pet, I create ideas that are geared toward both the baby and pup, so let us know so we can prepare.

  4. Make sure you are not coming alone, that there will be someone else to handle the dog. Our photographers always work with an assistant for newborn sessions, however, the assistant is more geared toward helping with the baby mostly and can offer a little help with a pet, however, a family member should be in charge of the pet.

  5. Try and stay in routine with your dog, get their morning routine in before the session or ask if there’s a place to walk the dog near the photography studio.

6. Lastly, be sure your pooch is caught up on all of their vaxxes for safety reasons before entering the photography studio.

Our fur babies are a part of the family and deserve to be included in your family portrait.
