Morris County, NJ Newborn baby photographer is getting rid of session fees.
Happy New Year. It’s 2025 and I’m trying something a little different with our newborn and maternity photo sessions at the studio. We’ve always had a session fee separate from the image fee. A good analogy is when you receive a bill for parts and labor. It’s two separate costs. I understand, it’s more itemized that way so people can see the differences and know exactly what the breakdown is and I may go back to that, but why not try things differently?
In listening to my clients, hearing their common questions about “what if I just buy the session fee” “what is the difference between the session fee and the images?” “does the session fee include images?” …..why not just make…it…easier…and have one fee? One fee will cover the session fee cost, which for me is overhead of a professional hair and makeup artist, an assistant, who is not just wonderful with people, pets and siblings, but is also a newborn photographer herself, so really, you’re getting 2 for 1 at our studio. It includes part of our rent because we have a studio and don’t work out of your home or my own home, we have a designated area to keep our props safe and clean. Years ago when my kids were little I did work out of my home, and one day my scissors went missing and I thought, hmmm…it’s time to get my own studio, so that’s what I did and I love it, even though the prices have skyrocketed over the past few years and my rent just went up again the first of this year. Yay. However, I wouldn’t give it up.
Anyway, getting back to the session fee and why I’m just having a package price instead. The packages are itemized, and hopefully it will lead to a bit less confusion when people see it. Am I concerned about sticker shock? Listen, our services are never going to be the least expensive that you find. If you’re looking at price alone, I’m not cheap. I hire the best, I have high quality props and outfits that are shipped from all over the world, I have a client closet that also ships from all over the world and labor is a cost when you’re hiring experienced, wonderful human beings whom you can trust not only to show up for work, but to do a wonderful job and help create happy clients that want to come back for their baby’s milestone photos and for their next newborn as well.
Some things to consider when hiring a newborn photographer: Are all of the costs included in the fees they’re showing you? Are there extra costs? I provide professional hair and makeup, and that’s what I show on my website. If you’re looking at a website and seeing they have professional hair and makeup and extravagant gowns, make sure that is listed in the cost that is provided to you. I’ve heard some crazy stories. Most newborn photographers are full of heart and honesty thankfully, but it doesn’t hurt to check.

Legacies are starting every day with families learning that they’re expecting in one way or another each day. It’s exciting to be able to photograph moms and dads during their early days of their parenthood journey. I hope with this new change, they’re able to focus less on cost and more on enjoying the moment or moments with us at our studio.
