Big brother is so curious about his new little sister…

Your firstborn has been everything! I’m the firstborn of my family and have 2 younger siblings, so I’ve been there. A kid with endless access to Mom and Dad for your entire life will now have to share time and what young child do you know that is very good at sharing? Schedules change, mom and dad are exhausted and not as playful right now, and there are crying noises coming from this baby during the day and night time, too.

There are a lot of changes in an older sibling’s life when a new member of the family arrives. Some siblings will want to help hold the baby, feed, change burp, or bathe the baby, so mom and dad, you may have a big little helper on your hand,s and some, like my nephew was with my niece, didn’t want anything to do with the little sibling. My nephew told his mom, “Send her back!”

At the studio, we try to be ready for anything. Usually, it’ll take a little bit of time for a sibling to warm up to having their picture taken and posing the way we’d like them to be posed. The unexpected candid, like this one above can be magical, too.

Bribery is a tactic that I’m not too proud to use at the studio with sibling pictures. This smart big brother got a few Oreo cookies out of this deal. Hey, if they’re in it for the snacks or a balloon or a toy or bubbles, or want me to stand on my head, whatever it takes to get the picture for Mom and Dad.

They’ll probably be laughing at this facial expression and remembering this day forever. I really should shoot a bit of behind-the-scenes for these photo sessions because most of the time, the activity going on is hysterical and makes for some good stories to tell as the babies get older.

Sibling pictures are everything!
