morris county, nj headshot photographer’s tips on a good headshot

We offer headshots in our studio usually on a quarterly basis. It’s great if you have just a couple of employees, you have the option of not just individual photos, but a group photo as well. This option is also great if you are looking to just update your headshot. I’d suggest an update every 2-3 years.

I know jumping in front of the camera and smiling is not everyone’s favorite thing to do and I totally get it. If I like being behind the camera more than in front of it, however, when I am in front of the camera, preparation helps me feel confident and ready to take on the task.

We send out a prep guide to our clients once they’re booked in; we’ll even arrange a time to chat with you if you’d like, to answer questions about your wardrobe, jewelry, hair and makeup, and other issues that people may normally avoid talking about. It’s a rarity that a person isn’t self conscious about SOMETHING about themselves.

Different people deal with this in a variety of ways; there’s the avoider, the person who is just wanting to be there for 2 minutes in front of the camera, click a few pictures and see what sticks..and are usually fine with anything that I pick out because they don’t want to even look at the pictures. This usually happens when the boss says “we need a headshot of you, and it can’t be that cropped, blurry picture of you from that wedding you went to 6 years ago”.

There’s the over thinker, who’s second guessing all of their choices from wardrobe to shoes to hairstyle, nail color, background color, etc.

You may be the client who looks like they’re moving into the studio when they arrive; with a variety of wardrobe changes, outfit ideas, makeup, jewelry, shoes, etc. WE LOVE YOU!! We love all of you clients, even if you’re not loving being in the studio for this.

No matter what the circumstances are, we at the studio have a variety of ways to prepare you for your day. If you feel prepared, there is no doubt that you’ll feel more confident getting in front of the camera. We just ask you read through our prep guide and reach out with any questions, or ask your questions before we start clicking away.

To build that confidence, we’ll talk about wardrobe, we’ll talk about the vision you have or your employer may have; are you wearing a shirt with your company logo? a suit and tie? We will let you in on a few secrets that really aren’t secrets, but they’re simple things you can do to look like your best self when you arrive.

Do you want to know some of the secrets? Well, I mentioned one, preparation, which leads to confidence. Secondly, drink water. Yes, hydrate for a few days leading up to your session; Your skin will thank you for it. Last little secret is to not do anything drastic or new a few days before your session, such as go spend time out in the blazing sun without sunscreen or a hat to protect your skin from sunburn, or go for a new trendy facial that your spa is offering because what if your skin breaks out? Which leads me into another topic…photoshop…

Photoshop is to enhance, well, that’s the way we like to use it. So if you show up in a black sweater with a ton of pet hair on it, thinking “oh they’ll just photoshop this out”. well, how about we avoid this scenario? I have some real funny stories I could share but I don’t want to embarrass anyone…(like using your jacket sleeve as a napkin to wipe the powdered donut off your face …but I digress)… Again, we love you all! We also love to laugh at the studio, it’s going to be a fun time while you’re here with us, I promise.

We are offering our next in studio headshot mini session day on May 31, 2024 and currently have a couple of open spots for the morning that day. Our studio is located in Landing, NJ. which is right near Lake Hopatcong and is a small part of Roxbury Township in Morris County, NJ. In addition to mini sessions, we offer a half and half session, which is half business photos, half personal photos, which is a great option and many women have taken advantage of this option. In addition, did you know that we will travel to you for employee headshots? If you have 10 or more employees, we will come to you and set up a day or multiple days to photograph your employees. We’re usually scheduled while employees are in town for meetings or team building activities.
